Kunming, China
Kunming Spring Lake Park is a distinctive landscape project located in Kunming, China — a city known for its clean air, tranquil environment, and natural beauty. Unlike typical urban parks surrounded by dense development, this site offered a rare opportunity — a pristine lake and peaceful setting untouched by heavy urbanization.
Walter Ryu’s design vision embraced this purity of nature, carefully crafting a park experience that harmonizes with the existing landscape while introducing dynamic spaces for future residents of the nearby new community.
The design strategy was rooted in preserving and enhancing the site’s serene lake environment. Rather than overwhelming the landscape with built elements, the park layout gracefully blends ecological sensitivity with playful interventions.
Due to the site's dramatic topographical changes, the design introduced a series of sculptural bridges — not only functional connections but also experiential elements guiding visitors through the landscape. These bridges became signature features, with thoughtfully designed railings that dramatize movement and frame views toward the lake.
The playground, created in collaboration with the renowned Aoya Playful Design Team, introduces character-driven play sculptures and top-class play facilities — all integrated into the natural setting without disturbing the peaceful atmosphere.

Every design gesture — from the bridges to the ecological planting — was carefully considered to respect the land while enhancing the visitor’s sensory experience.
